Apple Crumble

A simple yet sumptuous classic, this hot served desert is a great winter warmer that gives a lasting rich taste. A relative beginner dish, this can be made to eat hot or cold and can be accompanied by a number of different sides such as cream, ice cream or custard. Fantasic to eat on those baltic winter days with your family or loved ones.

900g Cooking Apples eg. Bramleys

175g Granulated Sugar

finely grated zest of 1 lemon

6tbsp Water

*You can also add a few dashes of Cinnamon the the apple mixture for a warmer taste*

Topping

175g Plain Flour

90g Butter

60g Demerara Sugar

1. Quarter, peel and core the apples, then slice them thinly. Toss the slices in sugar, lemon zest and water. Mix and leave whilst doing step two.

*Leaving the apples to soak in the sugar means the apples cook with a even texture and keeps the taste constant.*

2. Make the topping. put the flour in a bowl and rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs, then stir in the demerera sugar.

3. Sprinkle the topping evenly and generously over the apple mixture you've put in the dish. Bake in a pre heated oven at 180'C (160'C Fan, Gas 4) for 40-45 minutes until golden brown and bubbling emerges at the side.

Although best served hot, for thicker and more set juices, this desert can be eaten just as well, cold.
